Davao City Council has approved an ordinance restricting new settlements within 500 meters of the New Carmen Sanitary Landfill for the next five years. The measure aims to prevent environmental degradation and ensure public safety. The landfill, located in the city’s southern district, has been a focal point of environmental concerns due to its proximity to residential areas.
The ordinance, which requires a two-thirds majority for passage, mandates that no new residential or commercial structures be built within the specified distance. Existing structures must comply with updated zoning regulations. The decision follows years of public complaints about air quality and potential health risks linked to the landfill.
The move comes after multiple studies highlighted the risks of soil and water contamination in the surrounding area. Local officials emphasized the need for stricter enforcement to protect both the environment and nearby communities. The ban is set to take effect within six months, with a phased implementation plan to allow existing residents time to adjust.
The New Carmen Sanitary Landfill has been in operation for over two decades, handling a significant portion of the city’s waste. Despite previous efforts to improve waste management, the area continues to face challenges. The latest ordinance is seen as a step toward long-term environmental sustainability. The council has also announced plans to increase public awareness campaigns on waste reduction and proper disposal.
