The Philippine Senate has passed a law to ban minors under 18 from using high-risk digital services. The measure was approved on its third and final reading. The law targets platforms like Meta, which are considered high-risk due to their potential impact on young users.
The proposed legislation aims to protect children from online harms such as cyberbullying, exposure to inappropriate content, and privacy violations. It requires digital service providers to implement age verification systems and parental controls. The law also mandates the creation of a regulatory framework to monitor compliance.
This follows growing concerns among lawmakers and child protection advocates about the increasing use of social media by minors. Previous discussions had focused on the need for stronger safeguards, especially after reports of online harassment and mental health issues linked to social media use. The new law is expected to take effect within the next year, pending final approval from the House of Representatives.
