The Philippine National Police (PNP) reported that over 40 million individuals visited cemeteries nationwide during the observance of Undas 2026. The holiday, also known as the Day of the Dead, is a significant cultural event in the Philippines where families honor their ancestors by visiting cemeteries.
The PNP noted a high volume of visitors across various cemeteries, with some locations experiencing long lines and heavy foot traffic. Authorities emphasized the need for public awareness regarding safety and crowd management during such events.
Undas, or All Souls’ Day, is traditionally observed on November 2nd, though in the Philippines it is often celebrated on November 1st. The event is marked by the cleaning of graves, the placement of offerings, and the lighting of candles. This year’s observance saw a notable increase in attendance compared to previous years, reflecting the cultural and religious significance of the occasion.
The PNP has previously issued guidelines to ensure the safety of visitors, including the use of designated pathways and the enforcement of health protocols. This year’s event highlighted the continued relevance of traditional practices in Filipino society, despite ongoing challenges related to public health and safety.
