President Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr. Has called on Filipinos to prepare water storage containers and collect rainwater in anticipation of an expected drought linked to the Super El Niño phenomenon. The warning comes as climate experts predict a stronger-than-usual El Niño event, which typically brings prolonged dry spells and reduced rainfall across the region.
The administration has issued advisories urging households to store water and conserve resources. Officials have emphasized that the dry season could last longer than usual, increasing the risk of water shortages in both urban and rural areas. The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) has also been activated to monitor the situation and provide support to affected communities.
This follows a series of climate-related warnings from meteorological agencies, which have noted rising temperatures and shifting weather patterns. The last El Niño event in 2015-2016 led to severe droughts and water rationing in parts of the Philippines. This time, officials say the impact could be even more widespread due to the strength of the current event. The government is also working with local authorities to ensure emergency supplies are available in high-risk areas.
