The Ombudsman, Jesus Crispin Remulla, criticized the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) for its handling of the detention conditions of former House Speaker and Leyte Representative Martin Romulo. During an inspection, Remulla found deficiencies in the facility where Romulo was held.

The inspection revealed inadequate living conditions, lack of proper medical care, and insufficient hygiene facilities. Remulla stated that the BJMP failed to uphold basic human rights standards. He emphasized that the conditions were not in line with legal requirements for detainees.

This incident follows a series of complaints about poor jail conditions in the Philippines. Previous reports highlighted similar issues in other facilities, prompting calls for reform. The Ombudsman’s office has previously launched investigations into multiple cases of mistreatment in detention centers. The current case adds to growing pressure on authorities to improve prison conditions nationwide.
