Davao Oriental has announced plans to implement 283 water-related initiatives totaling ₱25 million to prepare for the effects of El Niño through 2027. The local government aims to enhance water management systems and infrastructure to mitigate the risks associated with prolonged dry spells and water scarcity.
The initiative comes as climate experts predict a strong El Niño event that could lead to severe drought conditions across parts of the Philippines. The region has already experienced reduced rainfall and increased temperatures, prompting authorities to take preemptive measures. Local officials emphasized the need for sustainable water storage and distribution solutions to ensure community resilience. The projects include the construction of reservoirs, rainwater harvesting systems, and the rehabilitation of existing water facilities. The funding will be sourced from both local and national budgets, with a focus on long-term climate adaptation strategies.
